Take a walk through the range of flooring

materials we supply…

A variety of flooring materials are compatible with our hydronic underfloor heating systems, transferring heat from below to warm your room to the desirable temperature above.

And because the Radiant team is on hand to provide guidance on the compatibility of flooring with your underfloor heating system, all you need to decide on is your preferred style and qualities…

Materials

Wood

The thermal conductivity of wood makes both natural and engineered wooden flooring a great option for underfloor heating. With it’s warm and inviting aesthetic, wood complements traditional and modern interior designs alike.

Wood should be no thicker than the recommended maximum thickness of 18mm, alongside the right density and moisture content for lasting integrity.

When using wooden flooring, heating temperature should not rise above 27°C so as to prevent damage to the flooring.

Materials

Vinyl

Vinyl sheets, planks and tiles are all suitable for underfloor heating; vinyl offers an affordable and durable flooring option for busy families on the go and for areas of high footfall, such as hallways.

The minimal depth of vinyl makes it thermally conductive, however, as with wood, temperature should not exceed 27°C.

If you’re looking for a cost-effective material which is durable, low maintenance and easily cleaned, vinyl is a great option.

Materials

Laminate

Whilst vinyl is made completely from synthetic materials, the core of laminate is made of wood fibres. Because of this, laminate is often chosen due to its high aesthetic appeal and ability to more accurately mimic wooden flooring.

Whilst laminate planks should not exceed the recommended 18mm thickness, high density is key for thermal conductivity. In this way, it is similar to wooden flooring, minus the price tag!

Materials

Tile

Tile is a great choice for underfloor heating systems, having a low resistance to, and high conductivity of, heat.

Perfect for areas of high heat loss, such as conservatories and garden rooms, as well as kitchens and bathrooms, tile is a low maintenance and highly durable flooring material.

With tile, your underfloor heating system can reach up to 29°C without worry of damaging the flooring, meaning the risk of cold tile under foot will not be a problem.

Carpet

Whilst carpet can encounter some problems working alongside underfloor heating systems, it is still a viable option to add additional comfort to your home providing the right carpet is chosen.

When picking a suitable carpet for underfloor heating, ensure the carpet is not too thick (check the tog rating) so as to prevent the heat from rising through the flooring and minimising the effect of your heating system. Some carpet backings, such as a rubber backing, will also increase the insulating characteristics of the carpet.

Carpets with hessian backings are recommended for underfloor heating systems.
